Back Country
January 28th, 2010
Got a new Pieps DSP avalance beacon yesterday and went out for a few hours in the afternoon to test it.
Its simplicity is the best. OFF, SEND, SEARCH. This beacon couldn't be
anymore clear. After burying another beacon and searching for it several
times I was impressed with how easy the beacon operates.
After testing it we put the skins on and headed up the mountain for a few turns. After weeks of storms and nasty weather the snow was great. Still light and there were still some good lines out there.
Now that I have a complete set of backcountry gear its definitely time to get away from the lift lines.

Back on Track
January 25th, 2010Two weekends ago I hunted Saturday and Sunday, only to bag 4 birds total. That’s was kind of disappointing considering that the chukar hunting had seemed to really pick up with the weather. But true to form, the one thing that has been consistent this year is its inconsistency.
Paolo and I spent last week in Las Vegas working the SHOT Show. For those who have not been to this show, it is really amazing. Basically every major manufacture in the hunting and shooting industry has a booth there. We got some great feedback on our product line and were showing some new products as well.
I had one of my best hunts of the year yesterday. There was a perfect amount of snow on the ground and the birds held really well. About 4 to 5 inches of light snow that the birds did not want to run in, but an amount that was easy for me to walk in. Once we got into the birds I was able to shoot a limit in about 40 minutes. Both dogs basically got in an equal amount of the work, each having multiple points, retrieves, and backing. It was as close to a perfect hunt as you can have, and it was a nice change after the tough hunting the weekend before.
We have two weekends of the season left, so for sure I will be hunting hard before the wild bird season is over until next September.
Below is a picture from the aftermath of my fastest limit from last year’s season, featuring the stars of the show. On that day it took about 25 minutes to limit out. Seems like I have about one of those a year. Yesterdays hunt was likely that one day this season.

Picture From the Past
January 13th, 2010I drove up to Oregon last weekend to visit my family, so I did not hunt. I will be back at it hunting both days this weekend though. We have received a lot of precipitation over the last week so hopefully things won’t be too muddy.
Below is a picture of Cash on point during one of my favorite hunts ever. On this day my wife came out with me. We had beautiful weather and shot a really easy limit. In fact, walking back to the truck with a limit in the bag I probably had 6 or 8 more good points. Those always make for good photo opportunities, and some bonus dog work.

Happy Hunting, and New Year Too.
January 4th, 2010

I had some really good bird hunting this last weekend. Thursday I got into some more Valley Quail, and Friday I shot my quickest chukar limit of the year. Sunday I went out to a spot 15 minutes from home that I thought was holding some chukar and was able to bag a few in less than an hour. I have attached some pictures, but unfortunately for reason of discretion, I am not able to show the best ones as they are very telling of their location. I am certainly happy to share information, but maybe not quite this publicly.
Happy Hunting.
Jay
